Ear infections are more common in children, frequently
between 6 months to 2 years age, said Dr. David Greene MD. Lifestyle effects a
lot of ear infections and children with chronic ear infections or those who
experience hearing loss and speech delay are caused due to fluid buildup behind
the eardrum, are the candidates for ear tube surgery.
If your kid has three or more ear infections in the last six
months or has more than 4 ear infections in the last year and most recent
infection was in last six months, would be the candidate for ear tubes, said
Doctor David Greene, an otolaryngologist in Naples, FL.
Children who suffered from hearing loss because of chronic
fluid build up behind the eardrum, will have benefit from the improved hearing
after ear tube surgery, said Dr. David Greene. Parents and caretakers will also
notice the speech development along with the hearing.
Ear tubes are the tiny cylinders about 1 mm long which is
similar to a grain of rice. Ear tubes are surgically inserted into the eardrum
in order to create ventilation system in the middle ear and also to improve
fluid into the eardrum.
After Ear tubes surgery, we have noticed a drastic life
change into the patients as it increases the hearing quality, cure pain which
means better sleep and comfortable and also improve the schooling.
According to David Greene MD, ear tubes remain in place for
6-12 months and if they fall out prematurely, the ear will be observed for
return of infections. Not all kids who experience ear infections are candidates
for ear tubes as it only required when your kid has fluid build up in the
eardrum. If, the infection is getting cleared up and fluid is not building in
the ear, avoid ear tubes and in case if your doctor recommends, consult with an
ENT expert such as David Greene.
